Garage and Concrete Floor Coating FAQ
FAQ
Questions and answers
- How much does epoxy garage floor coating cost?
- Typical U.S. ranges run about $3 to $12 per square foot, depending on the system, slab condition and prep work. A two-car garage often lands in the low thousands. Cracks, old sealer and moisture can raise the price. First, get a written quote from a provider in our network. Ask, then compare.
- How long does it take to coat a garage floor?
- Most epoxy jobs take about two to four days: grinding and repairs first, then the coats, then cure. Polyaspartic often moves faster because it cures quickly. Cure time counts. Foot traffic may be fine after a day or so, while cars usually wait longer. The provider sets the exact schedule for your floor.
- How soon can I coat a new concrete slab?
- New concrete usually needs about 28 days to cure before most coatings go on. Trapped moisture can make a coating peel later. A provider can test the slab first. Bare concrete also soaks up stains and salt, so plan the order with the provider.
- Does homeowners insurance cover floor coating?
- Usually not. Coatings are often seen as an upgrade or maintenance item. Some policies may cover sudden damage, such as a burst pipe that ruins a floor, so check your policy. Providers can often help document damage for a claim. Ask your insurer before any work starts.
- Is epoxy safe to have in my garage during installation?
- Fumes can be strong while the coating goes on. Keep kids, pets and anyone with breathing issues away. Ask the provider about ventilation, low-odor products and safety data sheets. A cured floor is generally considered fine for everyday use.
- Why do garage floor coatings peel, and how can I prevent it?
- Most peeling traces back to poor prep: oil, moisture, old sealer or a smooth surface. Hot tires can also lift a weak coating. Ask how the provider preps. A good answer names grinding, crack repair and a moisture test. A vague answer is a red flag.
- What should I ask a provider before hiring?
- Ask about prep method, product type, cure time and warranty terms in writing. Get the quote in writing too. Red flags include pressure to sign fast, no prep details and a price far below the rest.
- Are coated floors slippery, and does weather matter?
- Gloss coatings can be slick when wet, so ask about anti-slip grit or flakes. Weather matters too. Cold winters, road salt, spring flooding and hot humid summers all stress a slab. Many providers avoid coating a very cold or damp floor. Ask which months work for them and what temperature range their product needs.
